Step & Point

5–7 min station
Teaches

Using the lower body during the throw. Stepping at the target unlocks both direction and power.

Bring ● Softball ● Glove
Setup
  • Helper stands 20–30 feet away as the target.
  • Helper gives her a clear target — a mitt, a chest, a cone.
  • She starts with feet together or in a simple ready position.
How it works
  1. The player gets ready to throw.
  2. Before throwing, she steps with her front foot toward the target.
  3. The front foot should point at the helper — pinky toe leads the way.
  4. Then she makes the throw.
  5. Repeat slowly until the footwork feels automatic.
Watch for
  • Front foot steps toward the target, not off to the side.
  • She doesn’t throw with both feet stuck.
  • Step happens before the throw, not after.
  • Hips and shoulders rotate toward the target.
What to say
Step first.
Point your foot at me.
Step at your target, then throw.
Yes — that one was lined up!
High-five moments
  • Her foot lands pointing right at the target.
  • A throw that lands at the helper’s chest.
  • She steps without having to think about it.
Make it easier

Take the throw away for a few reps. Just practice step-and-point — the ball can wait. Build the feeling first.

Level it up

Put a cone where the front foot should land. Or rotate through multiple targets and call them out right before each throw.

Key cue
“Point your foot at your target before you throw.”
