Belly Button

5–7 min station
Teaches

Correct glove position — fingers up for balls above the waist, fingers down for balls below the waist.

Bring ● Glove ● Soft ball
Setup
  • Start without a ball — just the glove and the movement.
  • Helper stands right in front of the player.
  • Player begins in ready position, glove out front.
  • Once the movement looks solid, add soft tosses.
How it works
  1. Helper calls out “high” or “low.”
  2. The player flips her glove to the matching position.
  3. High ball = fingers up. Low ball = fingers down.
  4. Once that looks consistent, start adding soft tosses to match the call.
  5. Call it out before the toss so the habit builds without pressure.
Watch for
  • High ball → fingers up. Low ball → fingers down.
  • The glove flips early instead of at the last second.
  • Glove isn’t ending up upside down — slow the pace down again if it is.
What to say
High — fingers up.
Low — fingers down.
Flip it early.
Set your glove first.
High-five moments
  • Her glove flips before the ball arrives.
  • She nails a low one cleanly.
  • She calls out “high” or “low” herself without being asked.
Make it easier

Stay with no-ball reps longer. This drill is about building the habit, not testing reaction speed — let her get really good at the movement first.

Level it up

Call the direction at the last second. Or toss without calling and see if she can read the ball and set the glove on her own.

Key cue
“Belly button is the dividing line.”
